SCENOGRAPHY : THE GRADUATE PROGRAM

SCENOGRAPHY CULTURAL, EVNTS, MUSEUMS, THEATRE & OPERA

An exhibition of art works or the launch of a product, a theatre or opera set, these environments do not only present objects, architecture, dispositions or theatrical sets installed in a specific space. They are spaces in which the sophisticated staging and presentation implies an in depth cultural knowledge, a literary & historical knowledge, as well as technical and spatial expertise, the understanding of circulation, of lighting, the creation of graphic communication, and conceptualisation…

The role of the scenographer is situated at the meeting point of the arts, architecture and the event or show, At the heart of the conceptual and creative process.

Like an orchestral conductor: the conceptualisation and the installation of an event, of an exhibition, a show… the scenographer is a professional who’s skills and knowledge are more and more in demand by public and private institutions.

PROFESSIONAL OBJECTIVES

Exhibition scenographer

The exhibition scenographer is a creator, and main contractor who valorises the space and the artworks. His/her role consists of imaging the experiential journey, imaging the ambiance (lighting, sound, multimedia, etc) in a museum, gallery, a cultural or scientific space, etc.

Event scenographer

The event scenographer is subject to the same constraints as those of the exhibition or cultural scenographer, but the focus is the brand or the spirit and values of a product to communicate, the type of event and the space occupied. The scenographer creates fashions shows, product launches and events etc.

Show scenographer

The show scenographer imagines scenic sets, be they for theatre or opera… He/she creates all the pictorial, plastic, architectural, poetic, lighting, virtual, realist or symbolic, sets and decors which accompany and present a show, and which enable the elaboration of the scene.

THEACHING PROGRAM

About 20% of the classes are taught in English.

Internship

A 6 month internship is realised at the end of the school program between the months of June and December.

Cycle 1, Years 1 & 2

Acquisition of the fundamentals.

  • Year 1 Initiation, | 60 credits ECTS
    Discovery and initiation of the disciplines of space and scenography. In parallel, learning the cultural, graphic and technical tools, the creative methodologies and techniques. The first semester is concentrated on the discovery and understanding of the creative process in space and architecture.
    The second semester is concentrated on the discovery of the scenography creative process and the technical tools, necessary for its realisation.

    27 hours of classes per week on average*

  • Year 2 Acquisition | 60 credits ECTS
    Theoretical and technical scenography. The first semester is concentrated on the acquisition of the transversal knowledge specific to cultural scenography. And the second semester is specific to events scenography. An exercise at the end of the year opens the door to show scenography.

Cycle 2, Years 3 & 4

  • Year 3 Professional development | 60 credits ECTS
    A multiplicity of individual and group projects (culture, events and shows) in partnership with institutions, developing a methodology adapted to each subject, and demonstrating the realisation of a conceptual thought process. Production of technical files and budgets for project realisation. Preparation for the writing of the final year thesis (mémoire).

    25 hours of classes per week on average*

  • Year 4 Professional development | 60 credits ECTS
    Development of a personal and prospective approach, mastery of technical skills. This final year is consecrated on the writing of the thesis (mémoire), and on two diploma projects. On completion of the thesis, and its presentation, and on successful diploma graduation, an internship of 6 months accompanied by the realisation of an internship report, conclude the studies.
